Obituary for Mary Richardson

Mary Massey Richardson was born on December 26, 1913 to Janie Massey Gwyn and Will Massey in Rock Hill, SC. She went home to be with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on Saturday, April 28, 2018. She found peace in the strength of her faith and the love of her family.

At an early age, she joined Mt. Zion AME Zion Church. Later, after marrying, she changed her membership to Pleasant Ridge Baptist Church where she served faithfully in the Missionary and Usher boards, Pastor’s Aide as well as the Deaconess Ministry. Later, she moved her membership to Liberty Hill Missionary Baptist Church where she remained until her death. There, she was a member of the Young at Hearts, Missionary Society, and Deaconess Ministry. She was also the inactive “Mother of the Church”. She was a member of The Order of the Eastern Star, Chapter 291.

Mary was the third of four girls; all of her sisters pre-deceased her, (Sally Ford, Patsy Woods, and Alberta McMorris). One brother, John Massey, her husbands, Joshua Cheatham and Randolph Richardson, two sons, Sandy and Heyward Richardson, grandchildren, Maury Richardson and Cheryl Alridge, and three sons-in-laws, A. W. Durham, Clinton Partlow, and Dolphus Williams also pre-deceased her.

Mary leaves to cherish her memory, eight daughters: Bettye Richardson of the home; Annie Richardson, Fort Mill, SC; Gladys (Kenneth) Walker, Raleigh, NC; Margaret Cheatham, Brooklyn, NY; Sadie Williams, Gracie Durham and Elizabeth (James) Robinson, Rock Hill, SC, and Dorothy Partlow, Charlotte, NC; three sons: David Michael of the home, John, Charlotte, NC, and William (Johnsie) Cheatham, Brooklyn, NY; two daughters-in-laws: Ibra Richardson and Annie Bell Richardson, Rock Hill SC; one sister in law: Lorene Massey, Detroit, MI., and a host of grandchildren, great grandchildren, great-great grandchildren, nephews and nieces and other relatives.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, May 5, 2018, at Liberty Hill Missionary Baptist Church, 5725 Liberty Hill Road, Catawba, SC. Services will start at 10:45 with a Homegoing by the Order of the Eastern Star Chapter 291, followed by visitation from 11:15 until 12. Funeral Services will begin at 12. Interment will be in the church cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the York County Board of Disabilities and Special Needs, PO Box 549, York SC 29745. Bass-Cauthen Funeral Home is serving the family.
